Radiesse® vs. Sculptra®: Which is Better?

Dermal fillers are one of the most common aesthetic treatments, used to restore lost volume, add definition, or sculpt your features. Radiesse® and Sculptra® are two types of dermal fillers with unique properties and longer-lasting results than more widely known types. Your Manhattan Aesthetics expert injector will help determine the best option for your goals.

What are Radiesse® and Sculptra®?

Dermal fillers can use several different materials to achieve their results. These materials create the biggest differences between Radiesse® and Sculptra®.

Radiesse®

This filler uses calcium hydroxyapatite, a mineral found naturally in bone. It is delivered in the form of microparticles suspended in a dense gel. It adds an almost immediate boost of volume as well as stimulating new collagen formation over time.

Sculptra®

This filler uses poly-L-lactic acid, a material often used in medical devices because it works so safely in the body. Volume from this filler can take up to three months to develop as your body responds by increasing collagen production.

Radiesse® vs. Sculptra®: Which is Better?

Each of these fillers has unique benefits, but neither one is right for everyone. These fillers are not ideal for use in some areas, including the lips. Your expert injector may use several types of fillers to achieve your desired look.

When considering which filler is better, these factors can affect your decision:

  • Radiesse® adds immediate volume, while you will have to wait for your Sculptra® results, so you may prefer Radiesse® if you want to see results sooner.
  • Sculptra® is a more potent collagen stimulator than Radiesse®, so the results can last two years or more, while Radiesse® typically needs a touch-up every 18 months.
  • You may need up to three or four sessions of both fillers to achieve your goals, but your injector can discuss what you should expect.
  • Both fillers are used to treat lines and wrinkles, restore volume, and add definition to areas like the cheeks, chin, and jaw. They are often recommended for deep lines, including marionette lines and nasolabial folds.
  • Sculptra® is the only filler that can be used for a “liquid butt lift” or Sculptra® butt lift. This non-surgical procedure adds collagen to give you a noticeable lift and shape.

Am I a Good Candidate for Radiesse® and Sculptra®?

Most people can enjoy the benefits of both types of dermal fillers due to their body-safe materials. Ideal candidates for Radiesse® and Sculptra® are in good health and have achievable goals. Depending on the areas you want to treat or other factors, your expert injector may recommend one treatment over the other.

You should not have injections in an area where you have a skin infection or active skin condition. People with certain medical conditions may not be good candidates, and dermal fillers are not recommended if you are pregnant.
