Understanding and Treating Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a prevalent skin condition where certain areas of the skin become darker than their surroundings. Hyperpigmentation is actually just a broad term used to describe an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color.” When treating hyperpigmentation it is important to first understand the causes of excess melanin, the various types of hyperpigmentation, and the most effective treatments available.

What Causes Dark Spots on the Skin?

Melanin is the pigment responsible for the color of our skin, hair, and eyes. Factors such as aging, hormonal changes, and skin trauma or inflammation can increase melanin production. However, the primary culprit behind hyperpigmentation is sun exposure, which prompts melanin production.

Melanin functions as a natural sunscreen by absorbing UV rays, causing the skin to tan. Yet, excessive sun exposure can disrupt this balance, leading to hyperpigmentation. The most common forms of hyperpigmentation include sun spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Sun Spots

Sun spots, or age spots, are small, darkened patches typically found on areas frequently exposed to the sun, like the face, neck, décolleté, and hands. As we age, the number of melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) decreases, but the remaining cells grow larger and become more concentrated, resulting in more noticeable dark spots. Effective sun protection is crucial in preventing these spots from developing and worsening.

Melasma

Melasma appears as larger patches of hyperpigmentation, often on the upper lip, cheeks, and forehead. Commonly referred to as the “mask of pregnancy,” it affects nearly 50% of pregnant women due to elevated estrogen and progesterone levels that stimulate melanin production when exposed to sunlight. The condition, which is often influenced by genetic predispositions, can be challenging to treat due to its hormonal underpinnings and tendency to recur, especially if sun protection is not diligently maintained.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs after the skin heals from an injury or trauma, leaving behind a flat, discolored area. It is frequently observed in individuals with acne, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis and can also result from cosmetic procedures like dermabrasion, laser treatments, and chemical peels. Sun exposure can exacerbate this condition.

Professional Treatments for Hyperpigmentation

Several professional skin treatments can help manage hyperpigmentation effectively. At Greenwich Medical Spa, we recommend the following three options:

LaseMD Ultra

LaseMD Ultra is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes advanced laser technology to improve skin quality and reduce hyperpigmentation. It works by resurfacing the outer skin layers and stimulating deeper cell turnover, which helps to diminish pigmentation and improve collagen structure, reducing both dark spots and wrinkles. Typically, two or three sessions are needed, with a recovery time of a few days. LaseMD Ultra is safe and effective for treating sun spots, age spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

VI Chemical Peel

The VI Peel is a chemical peel that combines a blend of powerful acids to target hyperpigmentation. It works by exfoliating the outer layers of the skin to remove epidermal pigment and promote the growth of new, healthy skin. This peel is suitable for treating a range of pigmentation issues, including sun spots and melasma. The VI Peel also helps to improve skin texture and tone with minimal downtime. When treating hyperpigmentation, typically the Precision Plus Booster is used. This enhanced version of the VI Peel combines a unique blend of ingredients to address stubborn pigmentation issues more effectively. For best results, a series of peels may be recommended based on individual skin needs.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Treatment

IPL uses intense pulses of light to target and break down excess melanin in the skin. Dr. Jack explains, “IPL fragments the pigment, changing its molecular structure so it can be removed by the immune system.” The treatment also stimulates collagen production, improving overall skin texture and tone. IPL is particularly effective for sun damage on the face, chest, arms, and hands. Depending on the area treated and the desired results, we recommend between 1 to 5 sessions for noticeable, long-term improvement.
