What to Expect After an IPL Photofacial

Aging and sun damage can lead to dull, unevenly pigmented skin. An IPL Photofacial is a skin-rejuvenating treatment. It uses a broad spectrum of light to target a wide range of facial concerns. At Manhattan Aesthetics, this versatile treatment provides clearer, brighter, more even skin.

How Does an IPL Photofacial Work?

An Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) Photofacial uses light to restore more youthful-looking skin. While a laser uses one wavelength of light, an IPL Photofacial uses a spectrum of wavelengths that can target reddish and brownish pigments. It can also reach into the deeper layers of the skin, triggering cells there to increase their collagen production. Your skin produces less collagen when you age, but an IPL Photofacial can restore youthful levels.

What is an IPL Photofacial Like?

Your treatment at Manhattan Aesthetics will start with a cooling gel applied to the skin. A handheld device moves across your skin, emitting pulses of light. The treatment involves minimal discomfort with an occasional tingling or stinging sensation. You can expect your session to last 30 to 60 minutes, depending on the areas being treated.

What to Expect After an IPL Photofacial

An IPL Photofacial is non-invasive and requires minimal downtime. You can resume most normal activities, but you will need to avoid sun exposure and wear sunscreen. Most people experience some peeling, swelling, and redness that lasts up to a week. You can use gentle mineral makeup to make yourself feel more comfortable with your appearance. Results will usually appear within days and continue to improve for several weeks. Pigmented spots may temporarily darken before they disappear.

What Can an IPL Photofacial Treat?

An IPL Photofacial rejuvenates the skin to provide improvements in numerous areas of concern. Because it uses many wavelengths of light at the same time, it can treat:

  • Age spots
  • Uneven pigmentation
  • Sun damage
  • Spider veins
  • Vascular and pigmented lesions
  • Acne and acne scars
  • Skin laxity
  • Fine lines and wrinkles

An IPL Photofacial can treat reddish and brownish pigmentation simultaneously, unlike a laser that can usually target one or the other. This treatment can provide significant improvements for people with challenging conditions like rosacea.

What Results Will I See With an IPL Photofacial?

You will start to notice results as soon as any redness and swelling have faded, usually within a few days. You may notice the appearance of pigmented spots change before they fade away. Maximum results develop in three to five months as new collagen forms. Most people need a series of treatments spaced one month apart to achieve their desired results. One or two maintenance treatments per year can help maintain your smooth, even skin.
