How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Chemical peels work by resurfacing skin one layer at a time until the desired effect is achieved. The process triggers the body’s natural self-healing process and facilitates faster cellular turnover. Chemical peels also trigger long-term collagen production for improving overall skin health. Treatments can be customized to suit a variety of concerns ranging from pigmentation problems to lines and wrinkles.

Am I a Good Candidate for A Chemical Peel?

You may be a good fit for chemical peels if you’d like to reverse visible signs of aging and sun damage on the face or back. Chemical peels can be effective for nearly all skin types, textures, and tones. Opt for a chemical peel before a big event or social situation for gorgeous blemish-free skin.

Routine chemical peels make an excellent treatment option for patients who are seeking preventative care. Keep skin looking young, healthy, and fresh with regular chemical peels. Your skincare provider can help create a personalized treatment plan according to your individual needs and goals.

What Types of Peels Are Available?

Manhattan Aesthetics offers a large variety of chemical peels to suit your individual needs. Your practitioner will help determine which type of peel is right for you at the time of your initial consultation.

VI Peel

The VI Peel is all the talk in Hollywood and is one of the most popular treatments at our office. VI Peel is a proprietary formula developed to safely and effectively treat all skin types for hyperpigmentation resulting from acne, melasma, and sun damage. This treatment is a blend of TCA, salicylic acid, retinoic acid, phenol, and vitamin C.

You can expect to see brighter, clearer, and more even skin after just one treatment.  Most patients who choose the VI Peel treatment require 2-3 treatment sessions, performed at 2-4 week intervals. We may change the amount and frequency of your session depending on the condition of your skin.

Alphahydroxy Acids (AHA Peel)

AHA peels are excellent for dry, rough skin or skin that has superficial sun damage. AHA peels are often used to treat active acne and can be used prior to a TCA peel. We usually administer AHA peels in a series.

Trichloracetic Acid (TCA Peel)

TCA peels are a great option for targeting fine lines, wrinkles, blemishes, and hyperpigmentation. This treatment takes only 15-minutes, and the peel depth can be adjusted to the intensity you desire. TCA peels are an excellent choice for our patients with a darker complexion and heal much more quickly than Phenol peels.

Phenol Peel

Phenol peels are an optimal treatment for removing skin discolorations resulting from sun damage, birth control pills, and aging. Phenol peels can even be used to target pre-cancerous growths! This type of peel is a good option for patients with fairer skin. The procedure lasts for a minimum of 1-hour and has a more extensive healing protocol, which we plan ahead for with our patients during the consultation phase of this service.

How Long Does a Typical Treatment Take?

Treatment times can vary depending on the type of peel chosen. Certain peels have active ingredients that work in as little as 15-minutes. Conversely, deeper peels may take up to an hour or more as each layer of skin is gently exfoliated. Your Medical Aesthetics practitioner will advise you on treatment times at the time of your initial consultation.

What Results Will I See?*

You can see smoother, brighter, and tighter skin following your chemical peel. Chemical peels help reverse the aging process and improve overall skin quality. Patients typically see the best results 2-3 weeks after a superficial chemical peel. Full results from a medium or deep peel can be seen anywhere from 1-3 months post-treatment. Once desired results are achieved, you can maintain your glowing appearance with lighter sessions as needed.

Is There Any Downtime?

Some chemical peels have little to no downtime while more aggressive treatments can have up to 2-weeks of downtime. Closely following your practitioner’s post-treatment recovery plan can facilitate a speedy healing process without complications.

Side effects from a chemical peel can include redness, swelling, and tenderness. These side effects can subside in as little as several hours with a light peel and up to 1-month with deeper treatments.
