Hair Removal That Actually Ends
Shaving lasts a day. Waxing lasts three weeks and then you start again. Laser hair removal is the only one of the three that reduces how much hair grows back at all, because it works on the follicle rather than the hair above the skin.
Our practice sits in Murray Hill at 36 E 36th Street, a few minutes from Grand Central, Bryant Park and Madison Avenue. Most areas take between ten minutes and an hour, which is why so many of our clients book over a lunch break.
Every treatment here is performed by a medical aesthetician or physician, and the laser settings are re-calibrated to your skin tone and hair colour at each visit rather than set once and forgotten. If you want the underlying science first, we explain how laser hair removal works in detail.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
The laser emits a wavelength of light that is absorbed by melanin, the pigment that gives hair its colour. That absorbed light converts to heat inside the follicle and damages the structure that produces the hair, while the surrounding skin — which absorbs far less of that wavelength — is left intact. Dermatology calls this selective photothermolysis.
Your provider selects the handpiece for the area, then calibrates output to your individual skin tone, hair colour and hair thickness. The handpiece passes over the treated area, and the damaged hairs shed over the following one to three weeks.
That mechanism explains the two things people are most often surprised by: it does not work on white, grey or true blond hair, because there is no melanin for the laser to find, and it cannot be done in one appointment.
Safe for Every Skin Tone, I Through VI
Older laser hair removal had a genuine reputation problem with deeper skin tones, because the same pigment the laser hunts in the follicle also sits in the surrounding skin. Treated at the wrong wavelength, that causes burns and pigment change.
The fix is wavelength. Shorter wavelengths are absorbed strongly by melanin and suit lighter skin with dark hair. Longer wavelengths penetrate deeper and are absorbed far less by the surface, which is what makes them appropriate for deeper skin tones.
We treat Fitzpatrick types I through VI and choose the wavelength and settings to match. If you have been told elsewhere that your skin tone rules you out, that advice was about a particular device, not about the treatment.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?
Hair grows in cycles, and a laser can only affect a follicle while its hair is in the active growth phase. At any given moment only a portion of the hair in an area is in that phase, which is why one appointment cannot clear a region no matter how well it goes. Each session catches a different set of follicles as they cycle into growth.
At Manhattan Aesthetics we plan body areas as a course of at least six sessions, and facial areas as at least eight. Facial hair is more hormonally driven and cycles differently, which is why the face takes longer. Sessions are spaced to match the growth cycle of the area being treated, and your provider will set that interval at your first visit.
Hormonal changes later in life can prompt some regrowth, so many clients return for an occasional maintenance session once their course is complete. We cover this in more depth in how laser hair removal works.
Laser vs Waxing vs Shaving
| Laser Hair Removal | Waxing | Shaving | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Reduces future growth | Yes, permanently reduces density | No | No |
| How long results last | Years, with occasional maintenance | 3–6 weeks | 1–3 days |
| Appointment length | 10–60 minutes by area | 15–60 minutes | Minutes, at home |
| Hair growth needed first | None, shave beforehand | About a quarter inch | None |
| Ingrown hairs | Typically reduced over time | Common | Common |
| Works on white or grey hair | No | Yes | Yes |
| Cost over time | Front-loaded, then minimal | Recurring indefinitely | Recurring indefinitely |
The honest summary: laser costs more upfront and less over a lifetime, and it is the only one of the three that changes how much hair comes back.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Most people are. The treatment suits any Fitzpatrick skin type, and the single biggest predictor of a good result is hair colour rather than skin colour. You are likely a strong candidate if you:
- Have brown or black hair in the area you want treated
- Are tired of the shaving, waxing or threading cycle
- Get frequent ingrown hairs or razor irritation
- Can leave the area unwaxed and unplucked between visits
It is a poorer fit if the hair is white, grey, red or true blond, since there is no melanin for the laser to target. Being pregnant, actively tanned, or on a medication that increases light sensitivity means waiting rather than being ruled out. Bring your medication list to the consultation.
Before and After Your Session
Two short lists. Following them is most of what separates a good result from a mediocre one.
In the Days Before
- Shave the area the day before or the morning of
- Stop waxing, plucking and threading well in advance — the laser needs an intact follicle
- Avoid sun exposure, tanning beds and self-tanner
- Arrive with clean skin, no lotion, deodorant or makeup on the area
- Tell us about any new medication, particularly antibiotics and acne treatments
In the Days After
- Expect mild redness and a warm, sunburn-like feeling for a few hours
- Aloe vera gel or a gentle moisturiser settles it
- Skip strenuous exercise, hot showers and saunas for 24 hours
- Avoid sun exposure and use sunscreen on exposed areas
- Do not exfoliate until the treated hairs have shed, usually one to three weeks
- Shaving between sessions is fine — waxing and plucking are not
Frequently Asked Questions
How much does laser hair removal cost in NYC?
At Manhattan Aesthetics, single sessions start at $35 for small areas such as the upper lip or chin, and run to $350 for full legs. Packages of six sessions save 15% and packages of eight save 20%. Full per-area pricing is listed in the fee schedule on this page.
How many sessions will I need?
We plan body areas as a course of at least six sessions and facial areas as at least eight. A laser can only affect a follicle while its hair is in the active growth phase, and only a portion of an area is in that phase at any time, so each session catches a different set of follicles.
How long does one appointment take?
Between ten minutes and an hour, depending on the area. An upper lip is a few minutes. Full legs or a full back is closer to an hour. Most single areas fit comfortably into a lunch break.
Does it hurt?
Most people describe it as a quick snap against the skin, warmer and faster than waxing. Sensitive areas such as the bikini line and upper lip register more than the legs or arms. A topical numbing cream is available on request.
Is laser hair removal permanent?
The accurate term, and the one the FDA uses, is permanent hair reduction. A completed course permanently reduces how much hair grows back in the treated area, and what does return is typically finer and lighter. Hormonal changes can prompt some regrowth later, which is why occasional maintenance sessions are common.
Can I get laser hair removal on darker skin?
Yes. We treat Fitzpatrick skin types I through VI. Deeper skin tones need a longer wavelength, which passes through surface pigment and is absorbed far less by the skin itself. The settings are matched to your skin tone at every visit.
Is there any downtime?
None. You can return to work immediately. Mild redness and warmth for a few hours is normal and settles with aloe vera gel. Skip strenuous exercise and hot showers for 24 hours, and avoid sun exposure on the treated area.
Should I shave or wax before my appointment?
Shave, and do it the day before or the morning of. Do not wax, pluck or thread beforehand, or between sessions. Those methods remove the follicle contents the laser needs to find, which is the single most common reason a course underperforms.
Does it work on blond, red, grey or white hair?
No. The laser finds hair by its melanin, and light or unpigmented hair has too little for the laser to target. If this is your situation, say so when you book and we will discuss what else is appropriate rather than sell you a course that will not work.
