Botox® VS Xeomin®: What are the Differences?

Botox® and Xeomin® are injectables sometimes referred to as wrinkle relaxers or neurotoxins. Both offer a fast, effective way to smooth expression lines and wrinkles away. While the name Botox® has become synonymous with neurotoxin injectables, Xeomin® contains a more refined version of the botulinum toxin.

What are Botox® and Xeomin®?

Our facial expressions etch lines and wrinkles into areas like the forehead, brows, and around the eyes as we age. Smiling, frowning, and laughing cause muscles to pull on the skin. Botox® and Xeomin® temporarily stop the activity of these muscles, letting the skin relax and smoothing out even deep lines and wrinkles.

How Do Botox® and Xeomin® Work?

Botox® and Xeomin® operate using the same mechanism. They interact with the nerves that operate the facial muscles. When injected into a targeted muscle, they stop the nerves from sending signals telling the muscles to contract. Because injections use only a tiny amount of the product, treatment can target the muscles causing lines and wrinkles without affecting your natural facial expressions.

Botox® vs. Xeomin®: What are the Differences?

The primary difference between Botox® vs. Xeomin® is that Botox® uses a version of the botulinum toxin bound to other proteins, while Xeomin® contains a purer version of the molecule. For people who prefer no unnecessary extras in their injectables, Xeomin offers a more purified alternative

Some people find that Botox® loses its effectiveness over many years while Xeomin® may not. It is possible that the accessory proteins in Botox® desensitize the body over a long period, while the purified Xeomin® formula may not trigger the same effect. Your Manhattan Aesthetics provider will discuss your options and choose the best formula for you.

Where can Botox® and Xeomin® Be Used?

The most common uses for Xeomin® and Botox® include crow’s feet around the eyes, vertical lines between the brows, and horizontal forehead lines. While dermal fillers work on static wrinkles such as those caused by gravity, wrinkle relaxers work on dynamic wrinkles caused by muscle movement.

Botox® and Xeomin® can even prevent dynamic wrinkles when you start using them at a younger age. The more time your skin has without pulling and tugging, the longer it will take lines and wrinkles to develop. A treatment session a few times a year can keep you looking young and fresh-faced.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox® and Xeomin®?

If you have or want to prevent expression lines and wrinkles, you are most likely a good candidate for Botox® or Xeomin®. If you are pregnant, nursing, or have certain neuromuscular conditions, you should not use these products.
