Can Microdermabrasion Help with Acne Scars?
The quick answer is yes. The impact of acne scars can be far greater than the scars themselves, robbing us of self-confidence and affecting our relationships if we’re too self-conscious about our appearance. At Manhattan Aesthetics, our microdermabrasion procedure is a safe, non-invasive treatment that can minimize acne scarring and help prevent new ones from forming.

Microdermabrasion for Acne Scars
Microdermabrasion addresses a variety of skin-related concerns, but in relation to acne scars, it really can help. The Manhattan Aesthetics team uses a diamond-tipped handpiece to remove the upper layer of dead skin called the stratum corneum. The natural mineral tip of the handpiece doesn’t irritate the skin while it clears debris, bacteria, old and damaged skin cells to reveal smooth skin underneath, prompt cellular turnover, and boost collagen production.
For acne scar treatment, microdermabrasion works best on depressed acne scars, which create pits in the skin that are flat against the epidermis. Deeper scars, like ice pick scars, aren’t as successfully treated. If you’re experiencing nodular or cystic acne breakouts, talk to your Manhattan Aesthetics practitioner about the best way to treat your acne scars. Microdermabrasion may not be the best procedure for this condition as it can worsen inflammation. Stripping away the top layer of skin, however, can clear up certain types of acne breakouts, which can prevent new scars from forming.
Am I a Good Candidate?
Microdermabrasion may be right for you if your acne scars reside on the epidermis, and you’re ready for a smooth, luminous, clear complexion without a lot of downtime or harsher treatments and prescriptions. Schedule a consultation for more information.

What are Treatments Like?
Microdermabrasion treatment in the luxurious Manhattan Aesthetics clinic begins with a comprehensive skin evaluation and thorough cleaning and toning of your skin. Hot steam is applied to open your pores, and the microdermabrasion handpiece then polishes away the damaged skin cells of your topmost layer. The process takes between 30-60 minutes depending on the treatment area.
Downtime and Results
Microdermabrasion comes with almost no downtime and few side effects. Patients may experience redness and sensitivity for a few hours after treatment. For deeper treatments, there may be mild peeling. Sunscreen is critical for at least 48 hours following treatment. Your routine may be immediately resumed.
Results are often achieved with multiple sessions, between 3-6 or possibly more for patients with more damage to treat. With each treatment, the depth and rigidity of the acne scars are reduced as healthy skin cells replace scar tissue and collagen forms to more thoroughly support the skin. Monthly treatments may be recommended once you’ve reached your goals to prevent future scars from forming and keep your complexion at its healthiest and most glowing.
Finding microdermabrasion providers with the experience and technique that most effectively treats acne scars can be a challenge. In the wrong hands, microdermabrasion can be much more devastating to those with acne scars and current acne breakouts. At Manhattan Aesthetics our skilled team has the highest possible level of training, years of experience, and passion to properly and effectively treat your acne scars with microdermabrasion. Not all microdermabrasion treatments are equal—at Manhattan Aesthetics, ours are a cut above the rest.
