How Microneedling Works
Collagen is the most abundant protein in the human body responsible for the smooth, firm, bright skin we associate with youth and beauty. Collagen production slows with age, and the collagen we do produce loses quality. This is why our skin loses tension and becomes lax, more prone to wrinkling and sagging.
Microneedling combats this by creating tiny micro-injuries through pinprick-sized. At Manhattan Aesthetics, we perform two types of microneedling procedure, traditional and Radio Frequency (RF) microneedling. Both processes use the same general idea: create tiny injuries to the skin so the body’s natural healing process creates new skin cells and produces fresh collagen. This tightens the skin and replaces damaged, scarred, or stretched skin with new cells. The addition of RF to microneedling creates a deeper dermal impact and has a greater effect on acne scarring.
What is the Cost of Microneedling?
The price of microneedling depends on several factors unique to the patient: size of treatment area, focus of correction, and severity of the skin problems being addressed. Depending on your geography and provider, prices may range from $100 to $700 per session, with the majority in the $300 per session range. Treatments that compliment microneedling, such as PRP, may be added and could contribute to the overall cost. Typical patients require 3-4 microneedling treatments to reach their desired goals, scheduled 4-6 weeks apart.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?
Virtually any patient of any skin type can undergo microneedling. If you desire a brighter, smoother, more uniform complexion, reduced scarring, or reversing of sun damage, microneedling may be your ideal option.
Microneedling Results and Downtime
Some results of the microneedling procedure are immediate. You’ll leave your first session with softer feeling and tighter looking skin, and as your body heals the micro-injuries and replaces the damaged skin cells with new cells, boosts your collagen production and quality, the improvements will continue over time, anywhere from 2-4 more weeks. Better quality collagen lasts longer, so your results could be evident for a year or even longer.
There is little downtime associated with microneedling. Patients have reported skin sensitivity, some bruising for deeper treatments, and redness and swelling in the 24-72 hours following the treatment. These side effects are easily managed with cold compresses and over-the-counter pain medication. Some patients may wish to limit their public interaction during this time, but it’s not a requirement of the procedure itself.
While there are cheaper, DIY microneedling options, the results are not as long-lasting, dramatic, or corrective as professional treatments.
