What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is not a new skincare technique, but it has gained popularity in recent years thanks to its use by celebrities and models. Whether you first came across the term in a beauty magazine or a close friend let you in on their new skincare secret, here’s what you need to know about the dermaplaning procedure.

About Dermaplaning

Dermaplaning is an exfoliation technique in which a 10-gauge micro-blade (also referred to as a skin dermatome) is used to gently remove unwanted facial hair, dead skin cells, and oil to reveal the luminous and dewy skin beneath. Unlike microdermabrasion, which gently sands away the skin’s surface with a mildly abrasive device, dermaplaning causes less damage to the skin while providing a more dramatic end result.

During the dermaplaning procedure, one of our medically trained and highly skilled practitioners will prepare your skin before gently using the micro-blade on the surface of your face, scraping away any build-up of dead skin cells, makeup residue and the fine hairs that can trap oil and bacteria leading to blemishes. In just one dermaplaning session, your practitioner can remove up to two-weeks worth of dead skin cells from your face, allowing your fresh and glowy skin beneath to shine through.

Dermaplaning Benefits

Although dermaplaning and the thought of using a blade on your face can sound a little scary, it is important to remember that the procedure is conducted by an experienced dermaplaning professional who has been trained on how to safely use the blade on the skin of your face without causing any pain, harm or injury. Worries aside, dermaplaning can also provide a number of very significant benefits, including;

  1. Providing instant results, leaving you with smoother and more radiant skin from your first visit.
  2. Working well in conjunction with other skin treatments such as chemical peels.
  3. Requiring no downtime whatsoever, so you can get back to your routine straight away.
  4. Being suitable for sensitive skin because no harsh products or chemicals are used.
  5. Reducing hyperpigmentation and helping to even out skin tone.
  6. Helping to reduce acne scars by promoting evenness in skin texture and promoting healing.
  7. And helping makeup to go on more smoothly by removing unwanted villus facial hairs.

During your initial dermaplaning consultation at Manhattan Aesthetics, your skincare provider will conduct a thorough skin assessment to make sure that the method is right for you, and will walk you through the answers to any questions or queries that you may have about the procedure.
