How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Hair exists in 3 stages: active growth, transition, and dormant. Laser hair removal works only on follicles in the active growth phase, which is the reason we recommend multiple treatments. As hair enters the active stage, we’re able to damage the follicle, creating a cumulative shedding effect the more treatments you have.
The type of hair determines the type of laser. At Manhattan Aesthetics, we use the most advanced cosmetic lasers available in New York: the Diode, Alexandrite, and YAG lasers. This means we cover Fitzpatrick skin tone classifications 1-6, which makes nearly everyone a possible candidate for laser hair removal in our clinic. The Alexandrite laser energy is more suited for lighter skin tones, while the YAG laser targets unwanted hair on darker or tanned skin. The Diode laser treats medium to olive skin tones.

What are Laser Hair Removal Treatments Like?
Patients often ask how painful laser hair removal is, and for some, it’s quite painful, like a rubber band snapping on the skin. For others, it’s barely irritating, a mere tingling sensation. We offer topical numbing cream upon request, then choose the appropriate laser type for your specific skin and hair types. The handpiece passes directly over the treatment area, damaging follicles at the root so they shed, leaving you with finer, less noticeable hair. Depending on the size or number of treatment areas, your procedure may be as quick as 10 minutes, or as long as an hour.
Downtime and Results
There’s no downtime to laser hair removal, but we do recommend aloe vera applications and copper moisturizers to pamper the treatment area for 1-2 hours after your session. Avoid sun and tanning bed exposure for 2 weeks before and after your treatments.
You can expect an 85% reduction in hair growth at the end of your treatments, and many patients require up to 6 sessions on the body or 8 for facial treatments. Some of our patients reach 99% hair reduction. Due to future hormone changes, it’s possible new follicles will grow, but we offer touch-up sessions as needed.
