New York City Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion Treatment

Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive and non-surgical skin rejuvenation treatment that is also completely painless. Gently removing the top-most layers of dead skin, microdermabrasion strips away dull skin cells to reveal the soft, vibrant, and glowing skin beneath. During a microdermabrasion treatment, our board-certified doctors use a diamond-tipped handpiece to carefully remove the stratum corneum (the upper layers of dead skin, which also collect sebum and bacteria). By stripping away the stratum corneum, the smooth, new skin underneath can be revealed, giving a brighter complexion.

Following a comprehensive skin evaluation by one of our doctors, a typical microdermabrasion treatment typically lasts for between 30-60 minutes and requires no downtime to heal or recover, meaning that microdermabrasion patients can continue the rest of their day as normal.

Most microdermabrasion patients can see results following just one microdermabrasion treatment, however, for those with moderate or severe complexion issues, it is recommended that they have between 3 to 6 sessions spaced a week apart. This more rapid schedule of microdermabrasion helps to prompt maximum cell turnover and collagen production. Once a patient’s skin care goal has been met, the frequency of microdermabrasion treatments can then be dropped down to a single maintenance treatment on a monthly basis to keep dead skin at bay.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Aside from being a great way to achieve bright, glowy skin, microdermabrasion also prompts cellular turnover and boosts collagen production, helping to reduce large pores and minimize the size and appearance of depressed acne scars. Microdermabrasion works best on depressed acne scarring because the scars sit flat against the epidermis and so can be reduced more effectively over time with multiple microdermabrasion sessions. In addition to reducing the appearance of scarring, microdermabrasion can also help to prevent acne breakouts by removing bacteria and sebum build-up which, if left untreated, can trigger an acne breakout.

Here at Manhattan Aesthetics our highly trained and board-certified doctors, Dr. Morris Westfried and Dr. Parker, can discuss the suitability of microdermabrasion for your acne-prone skin and can also suggest other acne treatments if it turns out that microdermabrasion is not the best choice for you.

Am I a Candidate for Microdermabrasion?

If you are looking to combat mild sun damage and moderate signs of aging, or have large pores or blackheads that you wish to clear, then you could be a good fit for microdermabrasion. Microdermabrasion is a gentle technique that is safe for people with all skin tones and most skin types. If you are considering microdermabrasion to help you treat your acne, then you could also be a potential candidate especially if your acne scars sit on the epidermis and if you are currently free from a breakout.
