When you shop for skincare products, you probably filter by your skin type–oily, dry, sensitive, or otherwise. And when you consider popular skin rejuvenation treatments like laser resurfacing, you often have to factor in your skin tone. Some skin treatments, like microdermabrasion, make it easy by being safe and effective for all skin types!
What is Microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion is an exfoliation treatment that boosts collagen production and rejuvenates your complexion. During the procedure, one of our experts at Manhattan Aesthetics will use a handheld device to remove the top layer of damaged skin. Removing dead skin cells from the surface reveals a bright, healthy complexion. The process also helps increase collagen production.
Benefits of Microdermabrasion
This simple yet effective treatment can improve many common complexion concerns. The deep exfoliation removes damage, reducing wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and scarring. Since it also boosts collagen production, microdermabrasion can improve your skin tone and texture, too.
We often recommend microdermabrasion for:
- Fine lines and wrinkles
- Enlarged pores
- Acne scars
- Dull complexion
- Discoloration and dark spots
- Uneven skin texture
What Skin Type is Microdermabrasion Best For?
Many skin rejuvenation treatments are only suitable for certain skin types and colors. One of the advantages of microdermabrasion is that it’s safe for all skin types. Since no light or laser energy is involved, patients with any skin color can have the treatment. Microdermabrasion also doesn’t discriminate between dry, oily, or combination skin types.
Patients with oily or acne-prone skin may especially benefit from the treatment since it cleans out pores and can reduce acne and scarring. Microdermabrasion is gentle enough even for most sensitive skin. However, we may not recommend it if you have rosacea or are prone to broken capillaries.
What to Expect After Microdermabrasion
Your microdermabrasion treatment at Manhattan Aesthetics will be quick and easy. After the procedure, you can resume your day with minimal side effects. Most patients only have mild redness and dryness for a day or two.
Keep your skin moisturized to help it heal and avoid sun exposure exposure. You should avoid hot showers, steam rooms, and vigorous exercise for 24 hours after microdermabrasion. For approximately one week, avoid exfoliating your skin, and don’t use harsh products such as acids, retinol, and benzoyl peroxide.
How Many Microdermabrasion Treatments Will I Need?
You’ll likely enjoy brighter, healthier-looking skin within a few days. Concerns like acne scars and wrinkles typically take a few treatments, however. The best results are seen after a series of three to six weekly treatments. Then, we recommend a microdermabrasion session every month or two for long-lasting skin benefits.
