Prep Tips for Juvederm® Injections

Prep Tips for Juvederm® Injections

Whether you have lost facial volume or want to enhance your features with more definition, dermal fillers are a versatile, non-surgical option. At Manhattan Aesthetics, we offer a range of filler options, including Juvederm®. This family of fillers can treat many areas to restore youthful volume and smoothness. While injections are quick and convenient, you can take a few steps to ensure a smooth process.

What are Juvederm® Dermal Fillers?

Juvederm® is a family of dermal fillers that use a material called hyaluronic acid to add facial volume. This material is found naturally throughout the body, especially in the skin, where it holds onto moisture and adds hydration. Members of this family include:

Like other dermal fillers, Juvederm® is injected into the targeted areas in a short treatment session, often as little as 15 minutes.

Prep Tips for Juvederm® Injections

Prep Tips for Juvederm® Injections

We recommend several preparation steps before your dermal filler injections to help you achieve your best results. You may also receive specific instructions based on certain medications you take or other factors.

  • Avoid the use of NSAIDs like aspirin or ibuprofen, which could cause a higher chance of bruising after injections
  • Do not use alcohol or smoke before treatment since they can affect your risk of bruising and how quickly you heal
  • Do not have dermal fillers injected if you have had other injectables, such as Botox® within the past few days
  • Contact your expert injector if you develop an infection or active skin condition in the treatment area

Feel free to contact your Manhattan Aesthetics team at any point before your treatment if you have any questions. Preparation for dermal fillers is minimal, but a few simple steps can make it less likely that you will develop effects like bruising.

What to Expect During Your Juvederm® Injections

When you arrive for your dermal filler appointment, your expert injector will cleanse your skin and ensure you are comfortable before beginning. While you may feel a small pinch with the first injection, Juvederm® fillers contain lidocaine, a numbing agent that keeps you from feeling discomfort during your treatment. Many people spend less than an hour in the office from arrival to departure.

Is There Any Downtime After Juvederm® Injections?

One factor in the popularity of dermal fillers is the lack of downtime. You can return to your usual activities immediately after your Juvederm® injections. However, you may notice some bruising or swelling in the injected area. Proper preparation will minimize the amount of bruising, which will fade within a few days. Results are visible right away and can last a year or more.

What Can Chemical Peels Do for Your Skin?

What Can Chemical Peels Do for Your Skin?

Finding the right skin rejuvenation treatment can be a challenge. Each method offers different benefits and downsides. Chemical peels are a versatile form of skin resurfacing that can undo signs of aging, sun damage, and textural issues. At Manhattan Aesthetics, we offer chemical peels ranging from light to intensive to let us customize your treatment.

What are Chemical or Face Peels?

Most people are familiar with physical exfoliation. These treatments, such as microdermabrasion, buff away the outer layers of skin cells. Chemical peels are a form of chemical exfoliation, removing layers of dull and damaged skin to a controlled depth. They use different types of acids, including glycolic, salicylic, and trichloroacetic acids. The deepest peels use a compound called phenol.

What Can Chemical Peels Do for Your Skin?

What Can Chemical Peels Do For Your Skin?

Removing dead or damaged layers of skin affects it in several ways. First, it reveals fresh, new skin cells and strips away old, hyperpigmented ones. It also increases cellular turnover to give your skin a healthier glow. Each of our peel options has specific benefits:

VI Peel

The popular VI peel treats many skin concerns with its formula of acids, retinoids, and vitamin C. It is especially effective in treating all forms of hyperpigmentation, including melasma and sun damage.

AHA Peel

These peels are often recommended for dry, rough, or acne-prone skin. A series of treatments can keep your skin clear and smooth as well as improve the results of your topical skincare products.

TCA Peel

This versatile peel can address lines and wrinkles, sun damage, hyperpigmentation, and acne scars. This peel is often recommended for those with darker skin tones who may not be good candidates for lasers.

Phenol Peel

These strong peels are used to treat hyperpigmentation, age spots, deep lines and wrinkles, and precancerous lesions. They require recovery time but provide dramatic results for the right candidate.

Is There Any Downtime After a Chemical Peel?

The amount of downtime after a chemical peel varies depending on the intensity of the treatment. Light peels often result in some minor redness and sensitivity lasting a few hours to a few days, while a medium peel may cause several days of redness and occasionally flaking or peeling. A phenol peel requires an extensive recovery process. We will discuss what you can expect while planning your treatment.

Am I a Good Candidate for a Chemical Peel?

Almost anyone can enjoy the benefits of a chemical peel. With a range of options to choose from, we can find one that will suit your goals and lifestyle. Good candidates have realistic expectations and are generally healthy. You should not have a chemical peel on irritated or broken skin, and not all peels are recommended for all skin types.

Top 5 Benefits of truSculpt® ID

Top 5 Benefits of truSculpt® ID

Do you have a few spots that seem to hold onto stubborn fat no matter what you do? You can sculpt these areas and eliminate this resistant fat with truSculpt® ID, a non-invasive treatment that helps you achieve your desired contours without the risks or recovery time of surgery.

Top 5 Benefits of truSculpt® ID

What is Body Sculpting With truSculpt® ID?

Non-surgical body sculpting is an effective way to target problem areas of fat, but not all methods work in the same way. Using radiofrequency energy, truSculpt® ID works deep into the layers of fat beneath your skin, damaging the fat cells without affecting other tissues. Your body will eliminate the treated cells over time to reveal your final results.

Top 5 Benefits of truSculpt® ID

At Manhattan Aesthetics, several factors make truSculpt® ID one of our favorite body sculpting treatments. It helps more people achieve their desired results and reveals a more contoured figure.

Treats Larger Areas More Quickly

With larger applicators, truSculpt® ID can treat an area three times larger than its leading competition. Along with letting you treat more fat, it also works in as little as 15 minutes, while many other methods take up to an hour. As a result, you can more easily squeeze a session into your active schedule.

Fewer Sessions

Most people will see the results they want with a single truSculpt® ID treatment. Each session removes up to 35% of fat in the treated area. Some people may opt for a second session to improve their results even more. Results take about three months to develop fully.

Tightens Skin

Because it uses radiofrequency energy to target fat cells, truSculpt® ID has an added benefit: it causes collagen fibers in your skin to contract, tightening and firming it. It also triggers new collagen development to increase your skin’s strength over time. Most other body sculpting treatments do not tighten the skin, which can leave the treated area with skin laxity.

No Downtime

Noninvasive truSculpt® ID allows you to return to your daily routine, including work, without downtime or delay. Your skin may look red for up to a few hours, but you will not feel any discomfort. With short treatments and no downtime, truSculpt® ID is the ideal “lunchtime treatment.”

Safe for More People

Most types of body sculpting are recommended for those close to their goal weight, which eliminates many people who would still like to target problem areas. However, truSculpt® ID allows individuals who are overweight or obese to sculpt their figures and feel more confident.

You should note that although truSculpt® ID can be used for individuals of a higher body weight than other methods, it is not a weight loss treatment, and you should not expect it to help you lose weight.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Choosing the right treatment for skin rejuvenation means considering many factors. You want to know which concerns it can treat, how it works, and what results you will see. Microneedling is an effective way to restore smoother, more even skin by promoting youthful collagen formation and increasing cellular turnover.

What is Microneedling for Skin Rejuvenation?

Collagen forms most of your skin’s structure, and its decline with age can lead to laxity, fine lines, and uneven texture. Microneedling promotes new collagen development by creating microchannels in the dermis. These channels trigger healing factors that lead to repair with new collagen and fresh skin cells, leading to a smooth, refreshed surface. Microneedling can also be combined with radiofrequency energy for added benefits.

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

Am I a Good Candidate for Microneedling?

When you visit us for a consultation, your Manhattan Aesthetics expert will assess your skin and determine whether microneedling may be a good option. Unlike many lasers, microneedling is safe for all skin tones, and most healthy adults are good candidates. Candidates should have reasonable expectations about their results.

You might be a candidate for this treatment if you want to address skin concerns such as:

  • Skin laxity
  • Fine lines and wrinkles
  • Rough skin texture
  • Sun damage
  • Dark spots
  • Enlarged pores
  • Acne scars

Microneedling may not be recommended for you if you have certain medical conditions, are pregnant, or tend to form abnormal scars. You should also not have this treatment in an area where you have a skin infection or active skin condition.

Is There Any Downtime After Microneedling?

Because microneedling is customized to your needs, downtime will vary. People who have lighter sessions will generally have no downtime and can return to work or other activities right away. More intensive sessions may result in up to a few days of redness and sensitivity. Avoid irritating or harsh products for several days after treatment. Your provider can recommend products that will benefit your skin while it heals.

How Many Microneedling Treatments Will I Need?

The number of microneedling treatments you need usually depends on the skin concerns you want to treat. Deep textural issues such as acne scars will require more treatments than superficial ones. We usually recommend a series of at least three treatments, with some people benefitting from more.

Less intensive sessions are usually spaced two to four weeks apart, while we will usually wait four to six weeks between more intensive ones. Results appear within a few weeks and continue to develop for up to a few months.

How Long Do Microneedling Results Last?

Because it stimulates your skin’s natural collagen production, microneedling provides long-lasting results. Most people are happy with their results for a year or more, and annual maintenance sessions will keep your skin refreshed and smooth. Wearing sunscreen and using quality skincare products can help your results last.

When Does Botox® Kick In?

When Does Botox® Kick In?

Lines and wrinkles may seem inevitable, but you can smooth them away and even keep them from getting worse with a quick, non-surgical treatment. Botox® is an injectable treatment almost synonymous with wrinkle smoothing. If you are considering this treatment, you most likely have many questions, and your Manhattan Aesthetics team will answer them all.

What is Botox® Line and Wrinkle Treatment?

Botox® has been used for decades to treat medical and aesthetic concerns, including lines and wrinkles, muscle spasms, and excessive sweating. This injectable treatment uses botulinum toxin, a compound that relaxes muscles by temporarily preventing signals from the nerves that control them. It allows the skin to relax, leading to a smoother, refreshed appearance.

When Does Botox® Kick In?

When Does Botox® Kick In?

The average Botox® appointment lasts under an hour, and the actual injections take as little as 15 minutes. Your Manhattan Aesthetics team has been designated an elite Botox® provider by the manufacturer due to their skill and experience. You will not see any results from Botox® when you leave your appointment.

Many people start to see Botox® results appear after about three days. Full results take up to ten days to evolve, but most people are pleased their their wrinkle improvements within a few days. Once established, you can expect your results to last four to six months, depending on how your body responds to the treatment.

What Does Botox® Treat?

Because it relaxes the muscles that cause skin to wrinkle, Botox® is most effective on wrinkles that appear or deepen with your facial expressions. The most common areas treated with Botox® injections include:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Lines between the brows (glabellar lines or the 11s)
  • Horizontal forehead creases
  • Marionette lines
  • Nasolabial folds

Some types of wrinkles are better treated with dermal fillers, especially those caused by lost facial volume. Your expert injector will determine which treatment option will work best, and people often benefit from both types of wrinkle treatments.

Is There Any Downtime After Botox®?

You can return to work and most other activities after Botox®, although your injector will give you a few instructions. While there is no downtime, you should avoid rubbing your face or lying down for at least four hours after treatment. You may notice minor redness, swelling, or bruising in the area that can last up to a few days.

Am I a Good Candidate for Botox®?

Men and women have Botox® to look younger and more refreshed. It works safely for all skin types and tones. Good candidates are healthy and have achievable goals. There is no “right” age to start Botox®, and many younger individuals now start with “baby Botox®” or MicroTox as a preventative measure to keep wrinkles from forming. People with certain medical conditions may not be candidates.

What are the Best Skin Tightening Treatments?

What are the Best Skin Tightening Treatments?

Your skin has to change and adapt over time as your body changes and ages. Factors like weight changes and age-related collagen loss can lead to skin laxity in many areas of your face and body. At Manhattan Aesthetics, we offer several skin tightening options to firm loose skin for more shape and definition.

How Do Skin Tightening Treatments Work for Loose Skin?

Non-surgical skin tightening treatments usually work by using energy to stimulate cells called fibroblasts deep in the dermis. This energy causes the cells to increase their production of collagen, the protein that gives skin most of its structure and firmness. Radiofrequency is often the most effective form of energy because it treats deep layers of skin and fat without affecting the skin.

What are the Best Skin Tightening Treatments?

Skin tightening treatments can address several concerns beyond skin laxity. They can also remove stubborn fat for more effective body sculpting. Our aesthetic specialists will help determine which treatment best suits your goals.

ThermiSmooth® Face and Body

Whether you have loose skin on your face or body, ThermiSmooth® radiofrequency technology can help. This pain-free, noninvasive treatment tightens your skin in areas including:

  • Abdomen and flanks
  • Buttocks and thighs
  • Knees and calves
  • Chest and back
  • Neck and jawline
  • Around the mouth
  • Eyelids and around the eyes

Ask your provider about other areas of concern.

TruSculpt® 3D and TruSculpt® ID

TruSculpt® 3D and TruSculpt® ID are dual-purpose radiofrequency treatments used for many areas of the body, including the abdomen, thighs, and under the chin. Along with skin tightening, the radiofrequency energy also targets deep layers of fat cells, breaking them up so your body can eliminate them. TruSculpt® 3D uses a hand-held device, while TruSculpt® ID uses applicators sized and shaped for different body areas.

Radiesse® vs. Sculptra®: Which is Better?

Radiesse® vs. Sculptra®: Which is Better?

Dermal fillers are one of the most common aesthetic treatments, used to restore lost volume, add definition, or sculpt your features. Radiesse® and Sculptra® are two types of dermal fillers with unique properties and longer-lasting results than more widely known types. Your Manhattan Aesthetics expert injector will help determine the best option for your goals.

What are Radiesse® and Sculptra®?

Dermal fillers can use several different materials to achieve their results. These materials create the biggest differences between Radiesse® and Sculptra®.

Radiesse®

This filler uses calcium hydroxyapatite, a mineral found naturally in bone. It is delivered in the form of microparticles suspended in a dense gel. It adds an almost immediate boost of volume as well as stimulating new collagen formation over time.

Sculptra®

This filler uses poly-L-lactic acid, a material often used in medical devices because it works so safely in the body. Volume from this filler can take up to three months to develop as your body responds by increasing collagen production.

Radiesse® vs. Sculptra®: Which is Better?

Radiesse® vs. Sculptra®: Which is Better?

Each of these fillers has unique benefits, but neither one is right for everyone. These fillers are not ideal for use in some areas, including the lips. Your expert injector may use several types of fillers to achieve your desired look.

When considering which filler is better, these factors can affect your decision:

  • Radiesse® adds immediate volume, while you will have to wait for your Sculptra® results, so you may prefer Radiesse® if you want to see results sooner.
  • Sculptra® is a more potent collagen stimulator than Radiesse®, so the results can last two years or more, while Radiesse® typically needs a touch-up every 18 months.
  • You may need up to three or four sessions of both fillers to achieve your goals, but your injector can discuss what you should expect.
  • Both fillers are used to treat lines and wrinkles, restore volume, and add definition to areas like the cheeks, chin, and jaw. They are often recommended for deep lines, including marionette lines and nasolabial folds.
  • Sculptra® is the only filler that can be used for a “liquid butt lift” or Sculptra® butt lift. This non-surgical procedure adds collagen to give you a noticeable lift and shape.

Am I a Good Candidate for Radiesse® and Sculptra®?

Most people can enjoy the benefits of both types of dermal fillers due to their body-safe materials. Ideal candidates for Radiesse® and Sculptra® are in good health and have achievable goals. Depending on the areas you want to treat or other factors, your expert injector may recommend one treatment over the other.

You should not have injections in an area where you have a skin infection or active skin condition. People with certain medical conditions may not be good candidates, and dermal fillers are not recommended if you are pregnant.

What to Expect After an Emsculpt® NEO Treatment

What to Expect After an Emsculpt® NEO Treatment

Achieving a tighter, more contoured figure is a challenge even for those who lead a healthy lifestyle. Our bodies are built to store fat, especially in challenging places like the abdomen, thighs, and even the upper arms. At Manhattan Aesthetics, we offer Emsculpt® NEO to shape and tone your problem areas without surgery or recovery time. This treatment contours your figure in three ways for a sculpted look.

What is Emsculpt® NEO?

While most body contouring treatments focus on fat removal or skin tightening, Emsculpt® NEO is designed to do more. This advanced HIFEM (High-Intensity Focused Electromagnetic) energy also tones your muscles by duplicating the effects of many hours in the gym in one short treatment. It also uses radiofrequency energy to tighten your skin by increasing collagen production and breaking up unwanted fat cells to slim and sculpt the area.

What to Expect After an Emsculpt® NEO Treatment

What To Expect After an Emsculpt® NEO Treatment

Because Emsculpt® NEO triggers enough muscle contractions to mimic weeks of training, your muscles may feel achy or sore in the treated areas for a day or two. Most people say the feeling is similar to after a heavy workout. There is no downtime, but your skin may look red and feel warm for up to a few hours. Emsculpt® NEO is non-invasive, so there are no incisions.

Most people will need four sessions during a period of a few weeks to achieve their best results. Some results will become visible quickly, while others will take time to develop.

Which Areas Can Emsculpt® NEO Treat?

The advanced applicators and technology of Emsculpt® NEO allow it to treat more areas than older systems for better results. You can have this treatment to tighten and tone:

  • Abdomen
  • Thighs
  • Calves
  • Upper arms
  • Buttocks
  • Obliques
  • Quadriceps
  • Hamstrings

Ask your expert body contouring provider if Emsculpt® NEO can treat other areas of concern. This versatile treatment can address almost any area of your body.

How Long Do Emsculpt® NEO Results Last?

Because Emsculpt® NEO Works in several ways, its results develop at a different rate. You may notice improvements in skin tightness almost immediately as collagen fibers contract, but new collagen formation takes about three months. You will see increased muscle shape and tone throughout your four sessions. The results of the fat removal process also take about three months to develop as your body clears the treated fat cells.

Am I a Good Candidate for Emsculpt® NEO?

Almost anyone can enjoy the benefits of this noninvasive treatment. Unlike most body sculpting systems, Emsculpt® NEO can treat people with a BMI of up to 35, making it accessible to many more people. You may be a good candidate if you are healthy and have realistic expectations. Emsculpt® NEO is not a weight loss treatment, and you should not expect to see significant changes on the scale.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Take?

Getting rid of unwanted hair is no fun, no matter how you do it. Waxing, shaving, and other methods consume your time and money, and the hair keeps coming back. Put an end to hair growth with laser hair removal, an effective way to achieve smooth skin that lasts. Hair removal can be the last thing on your mind from now on.

What is Laser Hair Removal?

Each hair on your skin grows from a follicle. While methods like waxing pull the hair root out of the follicle, it quickly grows a new one. Laser hair removal targets the follicle itself by heating the pigment-containing hair root. This heat damages the follicle, preventing hair regrowth. You can have laser hair removal almost anywhere on your face or body and coarse or fine hair, and men and women can benefit.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Take?

You will need a series of laser hair removal treatments to see your full results. At any time, some of your hair follicles are active and contain a treatable root, but others are resting. The time between sessions allows more follicles to activate so they can be treated.

Most people will achieve their desired results with six to eight sessions. Factors that affect how many sessions you need include your hair texture, amount of pigmentation, and the area being treated. After each session, the treated follicles will shed their hair, and they will not grow back.

How Long Does Laser Hair Removal Last?

While laser hair removal results last a long time, you will eventually start to see a few stray hairs start to regrow. This can take months or years to happen, but most people can keep their skin smooth with a yearly maintenance session. Hairs that do regrow usually look finer, softer, and less pigmented than before.

Is There Any Downtime After Laser Hair Removal?

After laser hair removal, most people experience some redness and sensitivity that many compare to a sunburn. We recommend cold compresses to reduce these effects, and you should keep the area moisturized with a non-irritating cream for the next few days. No downtime is required, but laser treatments make your skin sun-sensitive, so wear sunscreen and avoid excessive exposure.

Am I a Good Candidate for Laser Hair Removal?

While older or less advanced lasers can only treat lighter skin tones and darker hair, Manhattan Aesthetics offers lasers that can treat all skin tones and most light hair colors. Most healthy adults are good candidates, although we will ensure you are in good health and have realistic expectations before planning your treatment. You should not have laser hair removal on irritated skin or in an area where you have a skin infecti

Understanding and Treating Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation Manhattan

Understanding and Treating Hyperpigmentation

Hyperpigmentation is a prevalent skin condition where certain areas of the skin become darker than their surroundings. Hyperpigmentation is actually just a broad term used to describe an overproduction of melanin, the pigment that gives our skin its color.” When treating hyperpigmentation it is important to first understand the causes of excess melanin, the various types of hyperpigmentation, and the most effective treatments available.

What Causes Dark Spots on the Skin?

Melanin is the pigment responsible for the color of our skin, hair, and eyes. Factors such as aging, hormonal changes, and skin trauma or inflammation can increase melanin production. However, the primary culprit behind hyperpigmentation is sun exposure, which prompts melanin production.

Hyperpigmentation Manhattan

Melanin functions as a natural sunscreen by absorbing UV rays, causing the skin to tan. Yet, excessive sun exposure can disrupt this balance, leading to hyperpigmentation. The most common forms of hyperpigmentation include sun spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

Sun Spots

Sun spots, or age spots, are small, darkened patches typically found on areas frequently exposed to the sun, like the face, neck, décolleté, and hands. As we age, the number of melanin-producing cells (melanocytes) decreases, but the remaining cells grow larger and become more concentrated, resulting in more noticeable dark spots. Effective sun protection is crucial in preventing these spots from developing and worsening.

Melasma

Melasma appears as larger patches of hyperpigmentation, often on the upper lip, cheeks, and forehead. Commonly referred to as the “mask of pregnancy,” it affects nearly 50% of pregnant women due to elevated estrogen and progesterone levels that stimulate melanin production when exposed to sunlight. The condition, which is often influenced by genetic predispositions, can be challenging to treat due to its hormonal underpinnings and tendency to recur, especially if sun protection is not diligently maintained.

Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation

Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation occurs after the skin heals from an injury or trauma, leaving behind a flat, discolored area. It is frequently observed in individuals with acne, atopic dermatitis, or psoriasis and can also result from cosmetic procedures like dermabrasion, laser treatments, and chemical peels. Sun exposure can exacerbate this condition.

Professional Treatments for Hyperpigmentation

Several professional skin treatments can help manage hyperpigmentation effectively. At Greenwich Medical Spa, we recommend the following three options:

LaseMD Ultra

LaseMD Ultra is a non-invasive procedure that utilizes advanced laser technology to improve skin quality and reduce hyperpigmentation. It works by resurfacing the outer skin layers and stimulating deeper cell turnover, which helps to diminish pigmentation and improve collagen structure, reducing both dark spots and wrinkles. Typically, two or three sessions are needed, with a recovery time of a few days. LaseMD Ultra is safe and effective for treating sun spots, age spots, melasma, and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation.

VI Chemical Peel

The VI Peel is a chemical peel that combines a blend of powerful acids to target hyperpigmentation. It works by exfoliating the outer layers of the skin to remove epidermal pigment and promote the growth of new, healthy skin. This peel is suitable for treating a range of pigmentation issues, including sun spots and melasma. The VI Peel also helps to improve skin texture and tone with minimal downtime. When treating hyperpigmentation, typically the Precision Plus Booster is used. This enhanced version of the VI Peel combines a unique blend of ingredients to address stubborn pigmentation issues more effectively. For best results, a series of peels may be recommended based on individual skin needs.

IPL (Intense Pulsed Light) Treatment

IPL uses intense pulses of light to target and break down excess melanin in the skin. Dr. Jack explains, “IPL fragments the pigment, changing its molecular structure so it can be removed by the immune system.” The treatment also stimulates collagen production, improving overall skin texture and tone. IPL is particularly effective for sun damage on the face, chest, arms, and hands. Depending on the area treated and the desired results, we recommend between 1 to 5 sessions for noticeable, long-term improvement.
