Is There Downtime After Chemical Peels?

Environmental exposures and the effects of aging can leave skin dull, rough, and unevenly pigmented. Chemical peels rejuvenate the skin by removing dead or damaged outer layers. This process brings healthy new skin cells to the surface for a more even, youthful appearance.

What are Chemical Peels?

Chemical peels are facial treatments applied to the skin. They chemically exfoliate the skin’s surface, removing targeted outer layers. The number of layers removed depends on the strength of the peel and the conditions treated. Peels that treat the outer layers of skin have minimal downtime but will require more sessions, while a deeper peel will have more downtime but more dramatic results with fewer treatments.

How Do Chemical Peels Work?

Most chemical peels use different acids, such as alpha hydroxy or trichloroacetic acid. These acids break the bonds that hold the dull, damaged outer layers of skin cells together. These old cells are swept away when the peel is removed, leaving the skin brighter and clearer. Manhattan Aesthetics offers chemical peels ranging from mild to intensive to meet your needs.

Is There Downtime After Chemical Peels?

Each type of chemical peel has a different amount of downtime. The following peels available at Manhattan Aesthetics range from no downtime to several days or more.

Vi Peel

Our most popular peel has many uses, but the Vi peel excels in treating hyperpigmentation. You will often see brighter, more even skin after one treatment, but most people benefit from two to three peels for maximum results. You can have treatments as little as two weeks apart.

The Vi Peel has no downtime and lets you immediately return to your usual activities. Your skin may look flushed for a few hours after treatment, especially if you have sensitive skin. Avoid sun exposure between treatment sessions.

Alpha Hydroxy (AHA) Peel

AHA peels work especially well for textural issues, acne, and superficial signs of sun damage. The number of treatments needed varies depending on your skin’s needs. These peels may have no downtime. However, you may also experience a few days of minor redness and light peeling. Your chemical peel specialist will explain what you can expect.

Trichloroacetic (TCA) Peel

These highly customizable peels can target hyperpigmentation, lines, wrinkles, and acne scars. They are usually part of a customized treatment plan that may include one or more AHA peels. A TCA peel may have no downtime or cause a few days of redness and peeling. These all-purpose peels can address a wide range of skin issues.

Phenol Peel

Our most intensive peel can treat significant hyperpigmentation issues like melasma, deep textural issues, sun damage, and pre-cancerous blemishes. Phenol peels are not right for everyone but can have dramatic results for the right person. These peels can significantly affect your skin and take time to heal. Your chemical peel expert will plan your recovery with you.
