How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Some aspects of personal care can be enjoyable and relaxing, but hair removal is usually neither of those things. You can put an end to this constant chore with laser hair removal and stop thinking about unwanted hair. This non-invasive treatment stops hair growth for smooth, hair-free skin that lasts.

How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?

Each hair grows from a follicle, a structure in the skin that holds the hair root and supports growth. When you shave, the root stays in the skin, resulting in quick regrowth. Waxing and similar treatments remove the root, but the follicle will quickly make a new one. Laser hair removal works by damaging the follicle so it cannot make new hair.

This treatment uses laser energy to target the melanin pigment in the roots of your hair cells. These pigment molecules absorb enough heat to deactivate the follicle, providing long-lasting results. As a result, you should take a few steps to prepare for your session.

How to Prepare for Laser Hair Removal

Because of the way laser hair removal works, it needs your follicles to contain pigmented hair roots. It also needs the strongest possible contrast between your hair and skin. Follow these tips to ensure your safety and achieve your best results.

Avoid Waxing, Threading, or Plucking

Most methods of hair removal other than shaving remove the hair roots. Without hair roots, your follicles will not be treated and will keep growing hair. You can continue to shave before treatment but do not wax or use other methods for four weeks.

No Hair Bleaching

If your follicle contains a hair root that lacks pigment because it has been bleached, the laser will not treat it. Bleach removes the pigment that the laser needs to target. Do not bleach hair in the treatment area for four weeks before your session.

Talk About Medications

Discuss all medications, including over-the-counter medications such as NSAIDs like ibuprofen and any supplements. Some of these can increase your risk of negative effects from treatment, so we may recommend you stop using them or adjust your dose.

Limit Sun Exposure

Avoiding sun exposure and wearing sunscreen is important for your safety and best results during laser hair removal. Do not tan or use artificial tanners. The more contrast there is between your hair and skin color, the more easily the laser targets hairs.

How Many Laser Hair Removal Treatments Will I Need?

Your hair follicles go through cycles of activity and resting, so not all of them will grow hair at the same time. Most people need six to eight sessions to achieve their desired results. With each treatment, more active follicles will be treated. Following your preparation instructions can help you see results as quickly as possible.
