What to Expect After Kybella®

How Does Kybella® Work?

Kybella® works by breaking apart fat cells in your submental area. The fat is broken down by deoxycholic acid, a compound found naturally in your digestive system. It targets fat without affecting the skin or other tissues, breaking fat cells apart so the body can use or eliminate them. When injected into your double chin, Kybella® starts working on fat cells. Your lymphatic system recognizes these damaged cells and filters them away over time. 

What to Expect After Kybella®

When you finish your Kybella® treatment, you may notice some sensitivity or redness in the injection area. Bruising can also occur, and most people will experience swelling. The swelling will become most noticeable 24-48 hours after treatment and will begin to resolve from that point. Each person’s experience differs, so that you may have more or less swelling. 

In the weeks following your Kybella® treatment, you may notice that some parts of the treatment area feel firm or uneven. This happens as a normal part of the fat breakdown process and will disappear as your body removes the targeted fat. Your Manhattan Aesthetics provider will tell you what to expect during treatment. 

Most people need a series of Kybella® treatments to achieve their desired results. You can expect to wait about one month between treatments. Depending on the amount of submental fat you want to treat and your response, you may need between two and six treatments to achieve your desired results. Results continue to improve after each treatment and for several months following your last treatment.
