Where Can Botox® Be Used?

Botox® was approved in 2002 for cosmetic use, but it has been used since 1989 for medical purposes. This versatile muscle relaxer treats conditions all over the face, neck, and body. Botox® can smooth lines and wrinkles to give you a more youthful, refreshed appearance, but it can also stop conditions like excessive sweating and muscle spasms.

What is Botox® (Botulinum Toxin)?

Botox® is an injectable treatment that relaxes muscles. It smooths wrinkles by stopping the activity of the muscles that cause them. Botox® is FDA-approved to treat crow’s feet, horizontal forehead lines, and vertical wrinkles between the eyebrows (glabellar lines). It also has many approved and off-label medical uses. Off-label aesthetic uses include the neck area, nasolabial folds, and marionette lines.

How Does Botox® Work?

Botox® and similar muscle relaxers use a lab-produced version of botulinum toxin. It works by targeting nerves that control your facial muscles. Nerves signal to muscles with a neurotransmitter called acetylcholine. Botox® temporarily stops these signals, so the muscle stops contracting, and your skin can relax and become smooth. At Manhattan Aesthetics, our Allergan-recognized expert injectors use skill and artistry to inject Botox® in a way that leaves you looking refreshed, not startled or frozen.

Where Can Botox® Be Used?

Botox® has a wide range of uses, both FDA-approved and off-label. These include:

  • Crow’s feet
  • Forehead lines
  • Glabellar lines between the eyebrows
  • Nasolabial folds
  • Marionette lines
  • Excessive sweating
  • Management of acne
  • Neck lines and bands
  • Migraines
  • Muscle spasms
  • Eyelid spasms
  • Overactive bladder
  • Lift the lips or nose

What is the Difference Between Botox® and Fillers?

Botox® and dermal fillers both smooth lines and wrinkles. However, they work in different ways and on different kinds of wrinkles. Botox® works well on expression lines and wrinkles that occur as a result of muscle motion. Dermal fillers work better on deep, stationary lines and wrinkles. You can also use dermal fillers in areas where you do not want the muscle-relaxing effects of Botox®.

What Results Will I See With Botox®?

Botox® results may appear within a few days after treatment, but they take a week to ten days to become completely visible. Botox® results usually last three to four months. They may last up to six months, especially for people who have regular Botox® treatments. You will see lines and wrinkles soften and become smoother, letting you look rejuvenated and youthful.

Is There Any Downtime With Botox®?

Botox® does not require any downtime. You can return to your usual activities after treatment. You should avoid rubbing the treated areas for several hours after your injections to prevent moving the Botox® around. Some people see minor bruising or swelling that lasts a day or two.
